The app

What is Match Ready: Rugby?

A strength and conditioning app for adult amateur rugby union players. It plans your gym, home and conditioning sessions around your club training nights and fixtures, by position, and adjusts each session from a quick morning check-in. On the App Store it’s called “Match Ready: Rugby Training”.

When is it available?

It’s coming soon to the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android). Leave your email on the home page and we’ll send one message on launch day.

Who is it for?

Adults (18+) who play amateur rugby union, from social sides to the top of the community game. Version 1 is adults only. An under-18 version will follow once its extra safeguards are in place.

I play women’s rugby. Is it for me?

Yes. Women follow the same programmes, loads and exercises, with no “toning” versions. Every position gets the full neck dose and the knee block in the warm-up, and there’s an optional private cycle log that’s off by default.

I’m over 35. Does it account for that?

Yes. The 35+ setting puts heavy leg sessions 72 hours after a game by default (48 if your check-in is green), adds a longer warm-up and calf and Achilles work, keeps speed and power work every week, and prompts a yearly health screen, plus a blood pressure check from 40.

Do I need a gym?

No. There’s a full no-gym pathway using bodyweight progressions, bands, a pull-up bar and a backpack or sandbag. You can switch equipment for any session. Strength rises more slowly without heavy loads and the app tells you that plainly.

How long are the sessions?

You choose 45, 60 or 75 minutes (60 is the default). Short on time? Accessories go first; main lifts, neck work and hamstrings are never cut.

Training

How does the app fit around my club training?

You enter your club nights and fixtures once. They’re treated as fixed. The app places its own sessions around them, never heavy legs the day before or after a game, and adds only what your club week is missing.

How does it choose my weights?

From an estimated max that updates from your logged sets, or a true 1RM test if you prefer (with a spotter or safety arms). You train from 90% of it. After each set you log how many reps you had left, and the next session moves from that.

What does the morning check-in involve?

Three countermovement jumps and four taps for sleep, soreness, energy, and mood and stress. It takes about a minute and gives a green, amber or red day compared with your own normal.

Does it do conditioning and speed?

Yes. Running is prescribed from your own maximal aerobic speed, with off-feet options on a bike, rower or ski erg. In-season, club training counts as your game-based conditioning, so the app only tops up what’s missing.

Does it include a warm-up?

Yes: our own evidence-based warm-up built on the same research and dose as World Rugby’s Activate programme, plus a timed match-day warm-up. It isn’t World Rugby’s programme; the app links to the official one.

Will the app predict if I’m going to get injured?

No. Nobody can do that reliably, and we don’t show risk scores or load ratios. The app describes your weekly load as higher, stable or lower and trims its own sessions if a week runs hot.

Health and safety

Is this medical advice?

No. Match Ready gives training guidance for healthy adults. If you have pain, a medical condition or a head injury, speak to a doctor, physio or NHS 111. In an emergency call 999.

What does the head injury feature do?

Press “Possible head injury” and training locks. You’ll see NHS 111 and 999 guidance, then a day-by-day return following England Rugby’s graduated return timeline, with daily symptom checks. It never says you’re “cleared”: a doctor decides when you can return to play. It’s always free.

What if something hurts during a session?

Tap “Something hurts” and rate it 0–10. Mild pain that settles by the next morning swaps the exercise for an easier version. Moderate pain halves that area’s work. 6 or more, swelling, a limp or any red flag stops that area and points you to a physio or doctor.

Does it give supplement advice?

Only an adults-only evidence card on creatine and caffeine, with UK Anti-Doping’s advice to assess need, risk and consequences, and to use only batch-tested products. Food comes first. No brands and no affiliate links.

Account, privacy and billing

How much does it cost?

£12.99 a month or £79.99 a year. The yearly plan starts with a 14-day free trial; monthly has no trial. Head injury, pain, illness and support tools are always free.

How do I cancel?

In your App Store or Google Play subscription settings, at least 24 hours before renewal. You keep access until the end of the paid period.

Where is my data stored?

On your phone. If you create an account, it’s also synced to our database hosted in London (Supabase, eu-west-2). Health data is only processed with your explicit consent and is never sold or used for advertising.

How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to the Profile tab and tap “Delete account and data” (or “Delete my data” if you never made an account). It removes your account and synced data. You can export your data first from the same screen.
